Maryland's Freedom to Read Act
LANDMARK LEGISLATION
Since April 25, 2024, Maryland has led the nation in protecting intellectual freedom through the Freedom to Read Act (HB0785/SB0738). This landmark legislation establishes statewide standards for school and public libraries, protects library staff from retaliation, and ensures materials cannot be removed based solely on viewpoint disagreement.
