What comes to mind when you think about “library advocacy?” Many libraries need to connect with legislative stakeholders, but academic library advocacy must target an entirely different audience. Academic library personnel routinely need to advocate for the library as an essential contributor to their college or university’s mission; however, advocating for your academic library really means advocating for a broad range of individuals – library staff, students, professors, and other campus community members – and doing so to a variety of stakeholders with varying priorities. In this program, join ACRL-MD as we explore what it means to be an “academic library advocate” from a variety of perspectives. Dr. Lucy Holman, University Librarian at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and former Dean of Libraries at the University of Baltimore, will share an administrator’s perspective on current advocacy issues and methods. Local library workers will facilitate breakout rooms centered around a specific aspect of academic library advocacy including advocating past failure, academic library fundraising, subtle everyday advocacy, advocating for open-source pedagogy and OER’s. Participants will have the opportunity to begin crafting their own advocacy narrative tailored for their networks and share ideas on a program padlet (an online collaboration tool) to gather feedback from colleagues. We hope you will join us for an engaging event!
