Active Shooter Response
Thursday, July 27, 2017, BCPL-Cockeysville Branch, 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Whether you like it or not, gun violence incidents in the U.S. seem to be occurring more and more often. Mass shootings have taken place in schools, malls, movie theaters, churches and work places. Research shows that if you had thought in advance about what you would do in the event of an incident, your chances of survival would be greatly improved. Our safety starts with personal planning and diligence. Join us as Denis Cornwall, Training and Development Coordinator for the Department of Public Safety at Loyola University of Maryland, guides us through the problem of active shooters, how to respond, and helping our libraries develop a plan for these unfortunate incidents. Thursday March 23, 2017, BCPL-Perry Hall Branch, 1:30-4:15

Have you ever had to give a speech to an audience and felt that nervous anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach? Join SSD as we present "Speaking in Public? I'd rather go Skydiving" delivered by Irmgarde Brown, Branch Manager at the Havre de Grace branch of HCPL and ALA's first ever Battle Decks champion. In addition to her work at the library, she is a motivational speaker, blogger, twitterer, and fiction writer. This workshop will teach tips and tools to easily facilitate giving a speech as well as teach techniques of effective presentation writing. It promises to be a lively, fun, hands-on workshop that will tackle the introvert in you. Participants will have at least 2 opportunities to practice a 2-minute speech based on topics given by the presenter. Light refreshments will be served. Onsite check-in begins at 1 PM.
