The 2008 Institute

The next Maryland Library Leadership Institute will be held July 14 - 18, 2008. Once again, Becky Schreiber and John Shannon of Schreiber Shannon Associates will lead the sessions. This year we will be meeting at the Riverfront Conference Center on the Donaldson Brown Estate - a beautiful location overlooking the Susquehanna River in Port Deposit.

Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2008.

Is it right for you?

You could be new in the field, or you could have an established career.  You could work in a school, academic, special or public library.  The Institute is the place for you as long as you have the necessary spark to lead the Maryland libraries of tomorrow!

A typical day

One thing you can say about the Institute is that you will never be bored. Each day involves activities designed to help you recognize your potential and make the most of it. You will leave with greater understanding - of yourself, your vision for the future, and your part in that future.

Here are some things that happen in a typical day:

  • Self-discovery - You will participate in a series of activies that will help you learn about yourself. You will discover strengths that you can put to use. You will also identify areas that will need a little attention in order for you to be your best.
  • Group learning - One of the greatest parts of the Institute is the opportunity to learn from the varied experiences and personal styles of your colleagues and mentors. There will be group exercises, presentations by Becky Schrieber and John Shannon, talks from the Institute's mentors, and informal meals and gatherings.  You will learn innovative ways to view and handle new situations and opportunities.
  • Networking - You will meet and spend time with people from across the state who share the same spark of leadership for the future of libraries. You will also interact with current leaders in the field who have a passion for libraries.  This gives you a chance to make new contacts, connections and friends!
  • Quiet moments - The Institute's days are packed with activities. You will have some time, though, to stop and reflect on what you have learned and what it means for you and your future.
