The Maryland Library Leadership Institute
Recognizing the need to develop leaders for libraries of the future, a group of Maryland librarians, with the support of the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Library Development and Services
(DLDS) held the first Maryland Library Leadership Institute in 1998, at the Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort in Cumberland, Maryland.
Thirty two participants attended a 5 day seminar facilitated by the nationally known team, Becky Schreiber and John Shannon of Schreiber Shannon Associates
. Candidates were nominated by their library directors based on demonstrated interest in leadership and commitment to library services.
Eight institutes have been held since its inception and have been coordinated by the Maryland Library Association. Graduates from the Institute have gone on to various leadership positions in their library systems.
The goals of the Maryland Library Leadership Institute are to identify emerging leaders within the Maryland library community and to provide them with a transformational experience to help them develop greater self-understanding, deepen their leadership skills, and prepare them to assume positions of greater responsibility.
The ultimate goal of the Institute is to provide Maryland libraries with a pool of committed, capable, and enthusiastic people who are prepared to take on the challenges that will come with leading us into the future.
The 2012 Institute will be held the week of July 16-20 at the Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center
.
